As reported by fanatix on Friday, Arsenal are set to make their interest in Southampton’s Luke Shaw concrete in January, as well as moving for Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha.
Arsene Wenger was given a much needed boost this week, as five young talents all put pen to paper on long-term deals at the Emirates. The quintet in question – Jack Wilshere, Kieran Gibbs, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Aaron Ramsey and Carl Jenkinson – are all British and it appears that the North London side wish to continue assembling a UK-based squad with move for Shaw and Zaha.
Zaha has recently won his first senior England cap, which is quite a feat give he currently plays for Championship side Crystal Palace and is yet to play a minute of Premier League football. The young winger has been in fine form over the past 18 months and has become the hottest property outside the top-flight.
A move for Zaha would certainly please Arsenal fans but might suggest that Wenger is not confident about keeping Theo Walcott, who is still locked in transfer talks with the club.
Shaw, meanwhile, could be the third Southampton starlet to move to the Emirates, following Walcott and Oxlade-Chamberlain to North London.
The 17-year-old defender has made the left-back spot his own at St Mary’s this season and is looking every inch a future England international.
Shaw combines the dribbling and attacking verve of Gareth Bale, another ex-Saints starlet, with the defensive nous of a much more experience player and he would be a great addition for the Gunners, particularly with Gibbs struggling with injuries and Andre Santos woeful.
