Arsenal are set to smash their transfer fee record and outbid Premier League rivals Manchester United, with a stunning £44 million offer for Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal.
The 27-year-old Chilean international has been a target for a host of top European clubs, following his impressive form for both club and country.
United, who have already signed Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw this week, were thought to be closing in on a £30 million deal, but according to the Daily Star, Arsene Wenger is ready to brush aside the competition with a stunning record bid.
The former Bayer Leverkusen player, who is a combative box-to-box style midfielder, would be an extremely welcome addition for Arsenal fans, who have already begun to grow frustrated at the lack of signings made by their team so far this summer.
The Gunners have already passed up the opportunity to re-sign Cesc Fabregas, who instead joined Chelsea in a £30 million deal, while they also missed out on Carlos Vela – allowing Real Sociedad to buy-out the striker’s release clause.
Vidal, who will be in action for his country later today as Chile take on World Cup hosts and favourites Brazil, would be an ideal addition to a midfield already boasting the likes of Aaron Ramsey, Santi Cazorla and Mesut Ozil.
