Arsenal could be set to make a surprise move for Borussia Dortmund defender and Manchester United target Mats Hummels, according to the Daily Mirror.
The Gunners face the possibility of losing Thomas Vermaelen this summer, with the out-of-favour Belgian centre-back becoming another of United’s defensive targets, and with Barcelona also thought to be monitoring his situation.
This could then see Arsenal move for Hummels as a replacement, with Arsene Wenger a big fan of the German World Cup winner, who was in fine form for his national side in Brazil this summer.
Valued at around £30m, the 25-year-old would become the north London club’s third most expensive signing of all time if he made the move to the Emirates Stadium, with Wenger seemingly ready to spend big again after recent marquee purchases of Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez.
Dortmund have previously insisted the player is not for sale, with Jurgen Klopp keen to avoid more big-name departures after losing the likes of Shinji Kagawa, Mario Goetze and Robert Lewandowski in recent years.
