Arsenal are prepared to break the bank to land Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema this summer, as transfer talk intensifies ahead of the new season.
The Metro report that Arsene Wenger is readying a £40m bid for the France international and – if successful – will become the north London giants’ highest earner.
Wenger is hoping to lure Benzema to the Emirates with wages superior to that of former Los Blancos team-mate Mesut Ozil, Alexis Sanchez and Theo Walcott.
Arsenal broke their wage structure to sign Ozil two years ago, and look set for a repeat with Benzema.
It was yesterday confirmed that Walcott had put pen-to-paper on a four-year deal worth £140,000 per-week – the same pay grade as Ozil – and a £40,000 increase on his previous wages.

Borussia Dortmund’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was said to be a top target for Arsenal; however, it was confirmed, on Friday, that the forward had signed a new deal until the end of the 2019-20 season.
Wenger may, therefore, now be looking to push through a move for Benzema.
