Sevilla’s Kondogbia looks to be returning to Ligue 1.
The running theme of Arsenal missing out on transfer targets looks set to continue as AS Monaco close in on highly rated French midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia of Sevilla, according to So Foot.
The 20-year-old’s physical nature and dominance in the middle of the field seemed to make Kondogbia the ideal acquisition for a Gunners side that is often said to lack grit.
However, with Monaco prepared to meet the France international’s £17m release clause, another talent looks set to bypass the Emirates Stadium.
Kondogbia is still a raw youngster, with fitness levels and a lack of passing nous occasionally letting the starlet down.
Yet at such a young age the midfielder has achieved a lot and was a stalwart in the Sevilla side last season after being signed from Lens in the summer of 2012.
Monaco have become an attractive prospect to several top European players due to the ambition at the club and minimal tax laws in the Principality.
One Arsenal midfield target does have his heart set on joining the club though.
With the likes of Radamel Falcao, Joao Moutinho and James Rodriguez already at the club, Kondogbia would be joining an established group of stars.
Unfortunately for Arsenal this would now mean that approaches for Gonzalo Higuain, Bernard and Luiz Gustavo have all failed and a deal for Liverpool’s Luis Suarez also seems unlikely.
This lack of transfer activity has frustrated fans in north London and an opening day defeat to Aston Villa at the Emirates only confounded that disgruntlement.
