Alaba to Arsenal…
Now this is a left field little morsel. On the surface, news that David Alaba, a star of Bayern Munich’s unprecedented treble winning season, is hankering for a move to Arsenal seems rather far fetched. Why on earth would he want to leave the pre-eminent European force and forfeit the chance to work with Pep Guardiola? According to the Metro, Davey Boy is desperate to play in his beloved left wing position, something that Jupp Heynckes didn’t agree with last year as the Austrian featured mainly as a left back. With Andrei Arshavin being ushered out of the Emirates back door this week there’s certainly a left flank to be filled in North London. Alaba’s chances of getting a game further up field are also looking a lot slimmer now that Mario Gotze has sealed his move to Bayern. Munich aren’t looking to sell, however, and at just 20, I’d be very surprised if Alaba didn’t stick around for at least one more year in Germany. There’s some spurious waffle floating around regarding Laurent Koscielny being used as a makeweight in any Alaba deal, but swap + cash deals are about as common as Brendan Rodgers quotes that make any sense.
