Arsenal could bid £30m for Newcastle pair Yohan Cabaye and Davide Santon, as they look to strengthen the squad for their title push in the second half of this season, CaughtOffside understands.
Arsene Wenger’s interest in his French compatriot Cabaye is no secret, and the Gunners tried to sign him during the summer, only to be rebuffed by Newcastle who believed their £10m offer was derisory.
The midfielder is having an excellent season once again, and has scored five and assisted three so far in the Premier League alone. At 27-years-old, he’s in his peak footballing years, and could move to Arsenal to play the deep-lying playmaker role currently occupied by Mikel Arteta.
Santon has not been linked to Arsenal before, but has been an ever present for Newcastle at left-back this season. The 23-year-old Italian is technically astute, and enjoys overlapping the winger and getting forward up the flank.
Although Arsenal already have Nacho Monreal and Keiran Gibbs as left-back options, first-choice right-back Bacary Sagna’s contract is expiring in the summer. Santon is equally comfortable on the right of a back four, so Wenger could be planning on bringing him in to eventually replace the talented Frenchman.
As a result, the Gunners could bid £30m for the pair, although it’s likely that Newcastle would demand more for two of their side’s essential players.
