Everton loan star Barry is a target for Wenger.
After impressing on-loan with Everton this season, Manchester City midfielder Gareth Barry has emerged as a transfer target for Arsenal, according to the Daily Express.
The Gunners actually made a move to bring in the 32-year-old on-loan themselves last summer, but the Citizens were unwilling to allow a player to join a Premier League title rival.
So in the end Barry joined the Toffees and the Englishman has impressed so much at Goodison Park that there has been talk of an international recall for the upcoming World Cup in Brazil.
Roberto Martinez tried to make the former Aston Villa man’s stay on Merseyside permanent in the January transfer window and then bring in ex-midfield ace Jack Rodwell from City as another loan signing.
Rodwell has struggled for playing time at the Etihad Stadium since a £12m move in 2012 and the club were willing to allow these double deal to happen.
However, things broke down when Barry stated that he wanted to wait until the summer to decide what to do next – which is when the player’s current deal with City expires.
This has put Arsene Wenger on alert once again, with the Frenchman being a big admirer of the England international and his strong work ethic.
Despite re-signing Mathieu Flamini from AC Milan in 2013, the north London side are still said to lack grit in central midfield.
Mikel Arteta has tried to operate more defensively but is more natural in attack and both Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere also have a tendency to break forward, meaning Barry could be the perfect acquisition.
