The Gunners will not be signing Newcastle’s Cabaye.
Newcastle United midfielder Yohan Cabaye has been strongly linked with a move to Arsenal in recent times but manager Arsene Wenger has denied the speculation.
The 64-year-old tried to sign the France international towards the end of the summer transfer window, but failed in the attempts and then Mesut Ozil arrived from Real Madrid for a club record £42.4m on deadline day.
However, since then Cabaye has been in great form for the Magpies and it was thought that the Gunners and Paris Saint-Germain still led the chase for the Frenchman.
Yet with a price-tag of around £20m and a host of midfield talent already at the Emirates Stadium, Wenger has put an end to those claims.
“Yohan Cabaye? We don’t look for midfielders,” the veteran coach was quoted by the Mirror following the 0-1 victory over Newcastle on Sunday.
“Today we had no Ozil, no Ramsey, who stayed at home, and still had three good midfielders, and still had Artaeta on the bench. There is no real need in there.”
Therefore PSG are apparently the only club now that could steal Cabaye away from St James’ Park, as the north London team perhaps target central defence and attack for recruitment.
It’s believed by many that Wenger’s lack of options in those positions could be the side’s downfall in the Premier League title race.
Beyond Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker at the back there is only the out-of-form Thomas Vermaelen as cover and any injury or suspension for Olivier Giroud would leave the unimpressive Nicklas Bendtner or Yaya Sanogo as options.
