Arsenal and Manchester United meet in a Premier League match this evening that appears equally vital for both teams – albeit for contrasting reasons.
The home side are of course involved in their first title race since 2007-2008, and have led the English top flight for much of the season, while the visiting Red Devils are still in transition in their debut season under David Moyes, and desperately seeking a UEFA Champions League place after a difficult campaign.
Arsene Wenger has been quite vocal in the lead up to the game about the Gunners’ need for a big performance from their record signing Mesut Ozil, who has been a peripheral figure in recent weeks, and had a disastrous game against Liverpool at the weekend.
Jack Wilshere, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Tomas Rosicky and Santi Cazorla are amongst the players likely to help Olivier Giroud in attack, while Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny will hope to resume their typically solid partnership at the back after a porous showing on Saturday.
Manchester United will hope that Robin Van Persie can come back to haunt Arsenal once again, while Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata each offer considerable goal threat themselves.
David Moyes was widely criticised for his side’s record number of crosses against Fulham, and it will be interesting to see if he alters his game plan against the Gunners at Emirates Stadium.
