In the traditional curtain raiser for the start of the new season, last season’s Premier League champions and FA Cup winners will meet in this afternoon’s Community Shield clash at Wembley.
Both sides are back at Wembley after cup final victories there last season, with City claiming the Capital One Cup alongside their title triumph, while the Gunners ended their campaign with an FA Cup final victory over Hull City at the famous ground.
Since then, Bacary Sagna has moved from the Emirates to the Etihad Stadium and may be in line to make his debut for his new club against his old one today. Other new faces will include City midfielder Fernando, and a host of new arrivals at Arsenal, with Alexis Sanchez, Mathieu Debuchy and Calum Chambers hoping to feature.
City will probably be slight favourites after their superb season last year, but Arsenal will be hoping to give a good account of themselves and show that they can be serious contenders in the title race this season.
Manuel Pellegrini’s side had the upper hand in these games last term, with a resounding 6-3 victory over Arsene Wenger’s men at the Etihad, followed by a 1-1 draw in north London later in the season.
Arsenal’s record in the big games is not great, and it will be fixtures like this that they will be hoping to improve in throughout the 2014/15 campaign.
