Despite long being linked with a move for Wanyama’s Saints team-mate Morgan Schneiderlin in that position, it now looks as though the Gunners have switched their focus to the signing of the Keyan international.
Wanyama has also had a highly impressive season in the Premier League, forming a strong defensive midfield partnership alongside Schneiderlin for Ronald Koeman’s side, who have surprised many by challenging for a European place after selling a number of their star players last summer.
It may be that Southampton will now lose more big names after Wanyama’s revelations about an approach from Wenger, with the 23-year-old seemingly open to making the move to the Emirates Stadium to ensure he is playing in the Champions League again after doing so at previous club Celtic.
Speaking about his future, he said: “Wenger has been talking about me. And he has let it be known he would like to sign me this summer.
“Arsenal are a great club and I’d love to play Champions League football as I loved being on that stage with Celtic.
“But we’ve had a fantastic season at Saints and I want to stay focused on helping the club qualify for Europe.
“Then we’ll see where I end up in the summer.”
