Arsenal look to raid poor Newcastle again…
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger will target Newcastle’s Dutch stopper Tim Krul, after being linked with a number of stoppers in the past week, reports the Sunday Sun.
Wenger is keen to strengthen the position, and will almost definitely sign a keeper before the end of the week.
Stoke City’s Asmir Begovic had previously emerged as the primary target, while Valencia’s Vicente Guaita and Espanyol’s Kiko Casilla could be signed if a move for one of the Premier League stoppers backfires.
Newcastle stopper Krul has been one of the most consistent stoppers in the Premier League for the past few seasons. The giant Dutchman is a fantastic shot stopper, but his presence and communication inspires confidence in his defenders.
Despite showing glimpses, and even some patches of strong form, Polish keeper Wojciech Szczęsny has never been truly reliable in between the posts at the Emirates. Most fans agree that a replacement is a must, and Krul is highly regarded by most fans around the country.
If a move for Krul fails to materialise, Wenger could well turn to La Liga for reinforcements. Guita is a 26-year-old Spaniard, who is uncapped due to the prowess of Iker Casillas, Victor Valdes and Pepe Reina in front of him at international level.
Similarly, Casilla, (not to be confused with the Real Madrid legend) is a 26-year-old Spaniard, and has enjoyed a first-team spot at Espanyol since 2011 after returning from various loan spells. He would be the cheapest of the three, but would also get fans the least excited.
Arsenal could also snap up Newcastle’s French midfielder Yohan Cabaye, although PSG appear to have stolen a march in the race for the mercurial playmaker’s signature.
