Arsenal’s 20-year-old England international Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is delighted at comparisons made between himself and Steven Gerrard, Arsenal’s official website reports.
His manager Arsene Wenger was quoted by the Mirror earlier in the month as saying his wonderkid, “has good quality to distribute and penetrate individually – very similar to Steven Gerrard.”
Oxlade-Chamberlain has been injured for most of the season, and has been restricted to just the one start in the Premier League. His legendary international teammate Gerrard though has been a cornerstone of Liverpool’s top four push, and has registered six goals and assists apiece in the league.
Regardless, the youngster is flattered by the comments, and hopes to one day be Gerrard’s equal.
“If the boss thinks I can one day maybe form my game around him, [it] is a massive compliment. He is someone I would love to emulate. I would be slightly different to the way he plays [that role], but if someone says you are going to be nearly as good as Stevie, you are going to take it. It is a nice compliment,” he said.
The comparison seems initially surprising considering Gerrard is an out and out central midfielder, whereas Oxlade-Chamberlain has mainly been used on the wing for the Gunners so far.
His manager believes he has the passing ability and technical nous to eventually move centrally, and if he reaches the heights Gerrard did during the mid-noughties, both the player and Wenger will be delighted.
