The players that could scupper the club’s European hopes.
After both Manchester clubs won their opening Champions League fixtures on Tuesday night, Arsenal will want to do the same in a tricky away tie with Olympique Marseille.
The Gunners have been drawn in a difficult group that also includes Borussia Dortmund and Napoli and with Marseille finishing second in Ligue 1 last term, here’s three stars the north London side should be wary of.
Steve Mandanda
Although Mandanda is a goalkeeper, as captain of the club and a great stopper it’s likely the 28-year-old will have a great influence on the game.
Several top sides have been linked with the France international and the ‘keeper’s efforts have helped Marseille only concede four goals in Ligue 1 so far this term.
Dimitri Payet
The winger was one of the best players in the French top tier last season and Marseille were moved to pay around £7m to Lille for Payet.
The 24-year-old has hit the ground running at the France international’s new club and three goals in the league has helped to establish the attacker as an important member of the team.
Mathieu Valbuena
Almost everything creative comes through attacking midfielder Valbuena, who’s role behind the striker is something that the 28-year-old has made his own.
An impressive season last term has seen the Frenchman become an established part of the national squad and to date the midfield ace has 26 caps.
Valbuena has also continued this campaign in the same vein and has three assists in five league matches.
