The midfielder is not well and is unlikely to feature in the next week.
Ahead of Arsenal’s Premier League clash with Manchester United last Sunday, several stars were struck down with illness and it seems Mesut Ozil is yet to recover.
Although the German was well enough to feature in the 1-0 loss at Old Trafford – unlike team-mates Per Mertesacker and Tomas Rosicky – the 25-year-old looked off the pace and sluggish.
It has now emerged that Ozil has the flu and Germany coach Oliver Bierhoff has not given a good prognosis for the attacking midfielder.
“He still suffers from the flu. I do not think he’ll be able to play a full-match on Friday,” Bierhoff was quoted by FootyNews24.
The nation have two potentially tough international friendlies coming up as they prepare for the World Cup in Brazil next summer, with Italy first and then England on Tuesday.
Facing the Italians will be a repeat of last year’s European Championship semi-final, when a Mario Balotelli brace sank the Germans.
Therefore the country will want revenge, but that task will be made even harder with the absence of Ozil.
For the Gunners the worry will be whether the midfield ace is fit enough to play for Arsene Wenger’s men when they go up against Southampton in the league on November 23.
Ozil has been an important part of the setup since making the £42.4m switch from Real Madrid on transfer deadline day and Wenger will not want to be without the player for too long.
