A look at the qualities of Arsenal’s five main striker targets.Arsenal are widely expected to bring in a new signing upfront this summer, with Arsene Wenger reportedly turning down the chance to re-sign his former captain Cesc Fabregas for £30m in order to focus on other areas of his squad.
With the Spanish playmaker now confirmed as joining Arsenal’s rivals Chelsea, there is pressure on Wenger to deliver in the transfer market, with Gunners fans under no illusions that their squad needs strengthening this summer despite the team claiming their first piece of silverware since 2005 with a thrilling FA Cup final win over Hull City.
A number of big names have been linked as targets upfront for Wenger, with five in particular looking like realistic targets according to various reports in the press.
5) Jackson Martinez (Porto)
After an impressive record of 60 goals in 91 games in total for Portuguese giants Porto, Jackson Martinez has become one of the most in-demand strikers in Europe. The likes of Chelsea and Valencia have also been linked with the prolific Colombian international in recent months, but it is thought that he is still on Arsenal‘s radar as they consider their options for next season. There’s no doubt that the 27-year-old’s combination of pace, power and composure in front of goal would certainly strengthen the Gunners and see him fit in well in the Premier League, but his £30m asking price may prove a stumbling block in the deal, as he looks to be one of the more expensive players currently on the market.
