2. Nemanja Matic, Chelsea – £20.75m

Can be considered an expensive mistake by the west Londoners – not for any fault of his own but because they sold him to Benfica in 2011 as part of the David Luiz deal.

Better late than never though and Matic has matured since leaving Stamford Bridge and now looks like one of the best box-to-box midfielders in Europe.
