Coming up to the top flight from the Championship is always a tough transition, but of the three promoted sides Cardiff had the funds to spend big on new talent.
So it was a surprise when they sanctioned a club record fee to be paid for a defensive midfielder with a discipline problem – those doubters have been proved right as the Bluebirds stare at relegation.
19. Konstantinos Mitroglou, Fulham – £12m
For some bizarre reason Olympiakos top-scorer Mitroglou gave up Champions League football in the January transfer window for a relegation scrap in England.
The Greece international also topped the Cottagers’ previous record fee that was paid for Steve Marlet (and we all know how well that turned out) but has since played only twice.
