Arteta was surprisingly handed the captain’s armband last week after defender Thomas Vermaelen departed for Barcelona after spending much of the previous campaign on the sidelines.
And despite coming in for some heavy criticism for his performances last season, Wenger has sought to make the veteran Spaniard his captain ahead of the new season.
And following quickly on the back of that news, Wenger has confirmed that the 32-year-old is in line for a new deal to stay at the club.
“He is a strong personality, Mikel Arteta,” Wenger said.
“It’s not done at the moment, but I don’t really doubt that he will extend his contract.”
Arteta has featured nearly 150 times for the Gunners since joining from Everton, and he has now entered the final year of his current deal at the Emirates.
He had been tipped to make an exit from the club this summer with Athletic Bilbao and Fiorentina both said to be keen to take him away from north London, but he now appears to be prolonging his stay with Arsenal.
