The 27-year-old played a crucial role in the Gunners securing a win against their Champions League rivals, and could have added to his personal tally on the night as he missed other chances after breaking into the box to support his teammates.
Although the absence of key players such as Theo Walcott and Aaron Ramsey may have allowed him more of a central role to support Olivier Giroud, Ozil will hope to put together a better run of form in front of goal after lacking in that department this season.
The German international has scored just three goals in 18 appearances in all competitions so far this year, although he has produced 11 assists as he continues to have a decisive impact for his side in some form.
However, it is clear that Wenger intends to give him more freedom to get into the box and ensure that his quality on the ball results in more goals.
Arsenal’s win over Zagreb coupled with Bayern Munich’s dominant 4-0 victory over Olympiakos ensures that the Gunners will travel to Greece next month still with a chance of qualifying for the knockout stages of the competition.
Meanwhile, their attention switches back to domestic matters this weekend as they take on Norwich City hoping to bounce back from their disappointing loss to West Bromwich Albion last time out, which saw them fall off the pace at the top of the Premier League table.
