Serie A runners-up AS Roma could be set to add to the defensive signing of Ashley Cole, with the Mirror reporting that the club are ready to make a move for Romanian centre back Vlad Chiriches from Tottenham Hotspur.
Chiriches arrived at White Hart Lane from Steaua Bucharest last summer as one of Europe’s most highly rated young defenders, but despite some fleeting glimpses of his potential he struggled in much the same way that Roberto Soldado and Erik Lamela did in their first season in North London.
With the likes of Younes Kaboul and Jan Vertonghen at the club, new Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino may be persuaded to sell Chiriches if it allows him to strengthen other areas of the squad that may require more urgent attention.
One potential hitch to the move, as suggested by the report, is that Spurs would be keen to recoup the £7 million that they paid to Steaua for the player’s services a year ago, despite his struggles to break into the first team.
Roma have been willing to splash out this summer, however, having also captured Juan Iturbe for £17.4m from Hellas Verona to compliment the impressive capture of Cole on a free transfer from Chelsea.
