An impressive bowling display on day 4 of the first test saw the hosts wrap up a 169-run win against the Aussies, with the visitors needing an unlikely 412 in their second innings to draw first blood.
After a mid-order collapse which saw them lose four wickets for nine runs, England took control of the test match and were well on their way to victory.
Captain Alastair Cook played a pivotal role in the field as his batting form was absent, taking this sensational catch to dismiss Brad Haddin.
However, Mitchell Johnson delayed their celebrations for as long as he could after hitting a solid knock of 77, but Australia were eventually bowled out for 242 in their pursuit of a sizeable winning total.
Joe Root will undoubtedly take the plaudits for playing an influential role in the victory, after he made 134 in the first innings before adding 60 in his second outing.
Moeen Ali was also influential across the four days as after his knock of 77 in the first innings, he took five wickets in total with three coming on the last day of play as Stuart Broad also helped himself to a few wickets too.
The second test will now get underway on July 16 as the two teams head for Lord’s with the Aussies having it all to do to now find their batting form and level up the series.
