The home side were relieved to see a first half strike from Nemanja Matic ruled out for offside, but after the break they began to find space on the counterattack.
A Delph forward run was halted by Willian – unfairly, deemed the referee – and the Brazilian was sent off.
Delph soon burst past more players in the centre before finding substitute Marc Albrighton on the left wing, who returned the ball with a low cross just behind his team-mate.
The inspired Delph was then able to adjust his body position superbly and flick the ball in, and Villa had their winner.
Chelsea meanwhile lost their heads, and Ramires was sent off for an ugly double stamp on Karim El Ahmadi, with Jose Mourinho sent to the stands for bizarrely protesting such a clear cut decision.
