Reports on CaughtOffside confirm the appointment, but Sherwood won’t be in full control until Villa’s next league game against Stoke City next weekend, meaning that caretaker boss Scott Marshall will be in charge for their FA Cup clash with Leicester City on Sunday.
Villa have not won any of their last ten league matches, while their record of just 12 goals in top flight games is the worst in Premier League history at this stage of the season.
Sherwood, who guided Tottenham to a sixth place finish last season before being replaced by Mauricio Pochettino, has signed a contract until 2018. Speaking about the deal, he said: “It is a great honour to manage one of the biggest clubs in English football.
“I can’t wait to get started and I’m really looking forward to the challenge.”
