Aston Villa are set to make an ambitious bid to sign out of favour Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley, the Telegraph reports.
Villa boss Paul Lambert has been given the green to light to chase Cleverley by chairman Randy Lerner. The former Norwich City boss is willing to offer £8 million for the England international, but he will face competition from Everton and Hull City for Cleverley’s signature.
The 25 year old has been told by United boss Louis van Gaal that he is free to leave Old Trafford with the Red Devils set to bring in midfield reinforcements themselves.
A move to Villa would be an opportunity for Cleverley to kick-start his career which has suffered severe damage in recent years.
The England midfielder has failed to hold down a regular spot in the United midfield and has been the source of frustration among fans after several lacklustre performances.
The substantial bid for Cleverley may come as a surprise to some Villa fans with chairman Lerner preparing to sell the club.
However, the American is still prepared to back Lambert with transfer funds meaning the midfield ace could be a Villa player by the end of the transfer window.
