Herrera is still on the Red Devils’s radar but it could prove to be a difficult negotiation period.
After Manchester United made a bid for Athletic Bilbao ace Ander Herrera the midfielder was left out of the club’s clash with Real Madrid as a move seemed close.
The 24-year-old is keen to switch to the Premier League champions having discovered United’s interest and is hoping to tie up the deal before the transfer window closes, reports El Correro.
However, Athletic coach Ernesto Valverde insists that Herrera was not left out because of an impending move to Old Trafford and that the manager expects the Spaniard to stay.
“It had nothing to do with the bid from Manchester United, I left him out because I chose the players I thought were best suited to the game,” Valverde was quoted by ITV.
“I haven’t spoken with the player but what I’m going to repeat is that I don’t expect the club to make any moves in the transfer market tomorrow [Monday].
“I do not know what will happen. I want Ander to stay with us, and that is what I think, expect will happen.”
United have turned to Herrera having failed to secure deals for Thiago Alcantara, Cesc Fabregas or Marouane Fellaini – although the Belgian could still be poached from Everton.
The Spain under-23 international has been a regular face in La Liga since breaking into the Real Zaragoza first team in 2008, before making the switch to Athletic in 2011.
Herrera prefers to operate as an attacking midfielder but is equally as adept as a box-to-box player in the centre of the park.
