Jaguars QB Blake Bortles has been named the backup for Jacksonville, meaning the team may be more inclined to give their future franchise QB extensive reps with the second-team offense.
The Atlanta Falcons travel to Jacksonville for a Week 4 preseason game against the Jaguars in what is typically a night exclusively reserved for backups.
The Jaguars have named QB Chad Henne as their starter for Week 1 against Philadelphia, meaning the team’s No. 3 overall draft pick Blake Bortles will likely see extensive action in the final preseason game. Bortles has been extremely impressive in the preseason but ultimately the Jaguars decided to go with the veteran Henne and let Bortles ride the bench in year one.
The Falcons first-team offense has played well in the preseason and looks like it is already in midseason form thanks to a completely healthy WR Julio Jones and the deep threat abilities of Devin Hester. The running game remains a problem though, and the Falcons will need to look very carefully at which RBs the team can afford to cut assuming they keep well-rested RB Steven Jackson as the primary back.
Prediction: Jaguars – Blake Bortles as a primary QB, even with an uninspiring offense, instills a little more confidence than whichever backup QB and RB the Falcons choose to start.
