The Japan star has had failed to feature so far this season, raising question marks over the future of what was once one of Europe’s brightest prospects.
Shinji Kagawa’s lack of match time at Manchester United has put Borussia Dortmund and Atletico Madrid on high alert.
Both the Daily Mail and the Telegraph believe that the sides are offering the Japan international a route out of Old Trafford for the upcoming season, should United consent.
Kagawa was once regarded as one of Europe’s finest midfielders and most promising young playmakers when United purchased him from Borussia Dortmund for £17m this time last year.
However, he only started 17 times in the Premier League last season and it yet to feature this year for the Red Devils.
With United’s widespread search for an attacking midfielder this summer well broadcast, it seems almost unthinkable that David Moyes would allow his only true central playmaker to leave before even giving him a chance to prove himself – especially without a replacement lined up.
Borussia Dortmund have been increasingly vocal about their desire to recapture their former hero, with fans on Twitter even getting the hashtag #FreeShinji to trend worldwide.
