The Uruguayan helped Atletico Madrid to their first La Liga title since 1996 last term, though quickly found himself linked with a move away from the club, Chelsea mooted as one of the sides on his tail.
Chelsea were amongst one of the clubs said to be keen on his signature, but as the transfer window came to a close the 28-year-old reaffirmed his desire to stay in the Spanish capital.
“It is true that this year some clubs enquired, but it was very clear in my mind”, he said.
“With the confidence that Diego Simeone gave me and what he told me, along with the president and the fans and the feeling I have for this club, it was very hard to leave.
“I decided to stay and I hope to still be here for many years.”
