Jackson Martinez is the popular choice at the Vicente Calderon Stadium.
In a poll conducted by Spanish newspaper Marca it emerged that FC Porto’s Jackson Martinez – who is a target for Tottenham – is Atletico Madrid fans’ favourite choice to replace Radamel Falcao.
Of the 22,600 supporters that voted, 27 percent wanted Martinez to be brought in at the Vicente Calderon Stadium this summer.
This number was higher than Napoli’s Edison Cavani (24 percent), Sevilla’s Alvaro Negredo (18 percent) and even Luis Suarez of Liverpool (13 percent).
Atleti are looking for a new front-man to lead their line following the £50m departure of top-scorer Falcao to AS Monaco.
However, it is something of a surprise that the Colombian has topped the poll as the striker was something of an unknown entity in Europe before his £7.7m transfer from Mexican side Jaguares de Chiapas last year.
Although since arriving at Porto Martinez has netted 31 goals in 40 appearances for the Portuguese champions and topped the scoring charts in the Primeira Liga.
With Atleti now having £50m more in the bank following the sale of Falcao, the La Liga side should have a significant budget to go out and find a replacement and if the club wants to listen to the opinion from the stands the 26-year-old is their man.
Yet Porto may not be so keen on parting with another of their stars having already lost Joao Moutinho and James Rodriguez, also to Monaco, for a combined fee of £60m.
With Martinez also scoring eight goals in 18 appearances for Colombia it is clear to see why he is popular at Atletico, but Spurs fans will be hoping Andre Villas-Boas will push Diego Simone all the way for the forward’s signature.
