Suarez could be set to replace Falcao at Atletico.
Atletico Madrid have joined city rivals Real in a bid to prize Luis Suarez away from England this summer, according to the Daily Mail.
The Liverpool striker recently revealed that he wishes to leave the Premier League after what he deemed to be unfair treatment from the English press, with speculation suggesting a move to Madrid would be imminent.
However, having sold Radamel Falcao to Monaco in a £50m deal last week, Atletico have emerged as another potential destination as they rival neighbours for the Uruguayan’s signature.
It is reported by the Mail that Suarez’s preferred destination will be the Bernabeu, but there are doubts as to whether the club are willing to meet the £40m asking price.
In contrast, Atletico are ready to use the money raised from the sale of Falcao to push their way to the front of the line and can also provide Champions League football next season.
Nevertheless, Florentino Perez, who is expected to be re-elected as Real president tomorrow, is facing criticism for his inability to land a big name signing so far.
Having missed out on Neymar who decided to join La Liga rivals Barcelona, the club will be desperate to strengthen the squad this summer following their failure to win silverware the season just gone.
Carlo Ancelotti has reportedly been lined up as a potential replacement for Jose Mourinho, while Tottenham’s Gareth Bale remains a top transfer priority this summer.
However, with Real also reportedly interested in Napoli striker Edinson Cavani, it promises to be intriguing summer in Spain as the Madrid giants go head-to-head in the transfer market.
