Tiago claimed that he turned down the chance to rejoin mentor Jose Mourinho at Stamford Bridge because playing for Atletico made him “feel important”, hence why the experienced midfielder decided to extend his contract at the Vicente Calderon:
“At the end of last season, I received a great offer and it made me think about making a change. But I realised that the most important thing was to feel important at a club.”
First team football may also have been a factor in Tiago’s decision, with the Portuguese perhaps more likely to start games in Atletico’s midfield as opposed to Chelsea’s, with Nemanja Matic and Cesc Fabregas beginning to construct a formidable partnership at the heart of the Blues’ team.
