Much has been made of Mata’s situation at Chelsea following Willian’s arrival, and is is Atletico who are the first to test the waters.
Atletico Madrid have made a bold season-long loan offer for Chelsea’s Juan Mata.
According to the Daily Mail the loan would also contain a clause stipulating the option to buy at the end of the season.
Six months ago an offer like this would have been considered laughably preposterous – Mata was named Chelsea Player of the Year for the second season in a row, Chelsea Players’ Player of the Year and within Premier League PFA Team of the Year. He was also on the shortlist for PFA Player of the Season and contributed an astonishing 39 per cent of all of Chelsea’s league goals.
However, early rumours of disinterest on returning manager Mourinho’s behalf seem to be true. The Special One has opted to bring in Brazilian playmaker Willian who, in addition to Eden Hazard, Oscar and Kevin de Bruyne, may well take Mata’s place in Chelsea’s starting eleven.
Atletico Madrid are the fist club to act upon this uncertainty within the Chelsea camp by attempting to take the influential Spaniard back to his country of origin for the season. Mata had an excellent four seasons at Valencia CF and would no doubt be a tremendous boost to last season’s third placed side.
