Home side wraps up the series 4-1 as the Three Lions team is left gutted by a close loss.
Australia pulled off a stunning five-run victory over England in the fifth and final ODI at the Adelaide Oval on Sunday.
England were bowled out on the fourth ball of the final over as the hosts fought back from what had looked like a losing position for most of the game.
The visitors had restricted Australia to 217 for nine wickets with a tight bowling display, but were all out for 212 in 49.4 overs.
Australia win the one-day series 4-1 with England captain Alastair Cook again left to wonder what might have been for his side, in what completes a horror tour of the country.
“We should have got over the line there… some poor shots were played under pressure. Australia have had a great summer against us and … on the back end of three months of that it probably showed for us,” Cook said after the game.
Winning captain Michael Clarke had nothing but praise for his one-day side and the Test side, that complted a 9-1 series victory against the English in both forms of the game.
“A magnificent performance by the boys with the ball especially, I thought our batting was disappointing today. For me it was about finding a way to take 10 wickets and bowl England out … to be able to find different ways to take wickets, the bowlers on both sides deserve a lot of credit,” Clarke said.
