Nathan Lyon’s unwanted record entry
To add insult to injury for Nathan Lyon after suffering defeat at the hands on India on day five of the first test his unflattering figures of 3-215 have landed him alongside Jason Krejza as the second-most runs conceded by an Australian bowler.
According to Fox Sports the record holder is Chuck Fleetwood-Smith, a bowler from 1938 whose figures of 1-298 have yet been untouched.
Indian skipper MS Dhoni was the main benefactor of Lyons less than desirable performance in the first innings as he chalked up a double century that put India firmly into a winning position that Australia never looked like equaling.
Krejza’s equal record was also against India in 2008 but before Lyon can take solace that he isn’t alone Krejza also managed to take 8 wickets in that innings making his figures much more acceptable.
Lyon’s back end batting stand with Henriques may help his case when the selectors review the first test but after such a convincing loss Lyon will have a nervous wait to see if he remains in the team for the second test as they consider Australia’s bowling options.
History doesn’t favour Lyon with Krejza only playing one more test match before having his international career cut short after posting similar run conceding figures against South Africa.
