Heavy rain overnight prevented any play at the Gabba in Brisbane and both sides took a point each, leaving them trailing Pool A leaders New Zealand by three points.
Surprisingly it is only the second time in the history of the tournament that a game has been cancelled entirely, with the last time it happened coming way back in 1979 when Sri Lanka were unable to play West Indies at the Oval.
Australian captain Michael Clarke was expected to make his return from injury in the tie having not played a competitive international match since December after undergoing surgery.
The Bangladeshis now have a good chance of qualification after beating Afghanistan in their opener and they face the Sri Lankans next on Thursday.
Meanwhile for the Aussies they have to wait until next Saturday for their next outing as they face fellow hosts New Zealand in a game they really need to win after this wash out.
