The Chelsea goalkeeper gifted Erik Lamela the easiest goal he will ever score in the friendly
In a playing career that has spanned over 23-years, mistakes have been rare in Mark Schwarzer’s game – so it was no surprise that he was left red faced after his blunder against Roma.
Schwarzer was deceived by a bobbly back-pass from a Chelsea team-mate that saw the ball flick up off his right boot, ricochet off the post and fall invitingly for Erik Lamela to score despite the veteran Socceroos goalkeeper’s desperate attempts to block the Tottenham target’s tap-in.
“You look very silly, obviously,” Fox Sports report him as telling AAP. “It was my mistake.
“It was very disappointing, but it does happen sometimes. You do make mistakes.”
The 40-year-old, who joined the Blues on a free transfer from Fulham earlier this summer, admits the error will prey on his mind the next time he is between the posts for the Europa League holders, especially after the clip went viral following Sunday’s clash in Washington DC.
“I was saying to my wife when I got home, I don’t remember the last time I actually made a mistake like that,” he added.
“It was just one of the those things.”
