Australian FA Cup approved
The Football Federation of Australia have announced that from next year, there will be an additional Countrywide competition.
The FFA Cup, will be similar in design to the FA Cup, it is open to clubs of all levels right down to amateur and Semi Professional.
The A-league sides, much like the Premier League and Championship sides in England, will enter later on in the Tournament.
Plans are for the Final to be played in December 2014 with the preceding rounds starting from January.
All A-League sides as well as State and Territory Federations have given the project their full support.
Speaking to Football Australia,FFA CEO David Gallop said: “The idea of the FFA Cup has captured the imagination of the football community and there’s a huge groundswell of support.
“Everyone in the game is keen for this concept to come to life, but the prudent way forward is to ensure the right commercial and organisational foundations are in place.
“FFA Management now has a mandate to conclude the many positive talks we’ve had with broadcasters, sponsors and commercial partners.”
The project was granted approval by the FFA board last week.
A proved all over Europe countless times, knockout Cups that encompass the lower levels of the football pyramid often provide great drama and entertainment.
Having that kind of tournament in Australia can only be a benefit.
