Two-time Grand Slam winner Lleyton Hewitt has announced plans to retire following the 2016 Australian Open.
Next year’s event would be Hewitt’s 20th appearance at his home Grand Slam, and the 33-year-old plans to call it quits following the tournament.
The fiery Australian says he has been thinking about his retirement plans after he was knocked out in the second round of this year’s Australian Open by Benjamin Becker.
“I’ve thought long and hard. I plan to play the Aussie Open next year and most likely finish then,” he is quoted as saying by The News.
“Personally I’ll be looking towards the grass court season and most likely finishing here in Melbourne, which for me would obviously be special to play 20 Australian Opens.”
Hewitt has never won his home Grand Slam – and although 2016 win is seemingly unlikely – he is sure to receive a big send off by the Australian tennis community.
