Maria Sharapova says that comparisons drawn between herself and Canadian tennis queen Eugenie Bouchard are “understandable”.
The beginning of Bouchard’s career almost mirrors that of Sharapova’s, with both players quickly rising up both the rankings and marketability ladder.
The pair meet in the quarter finals of the Australian Open, and Sharapova says the comparisons made with Bouchard are similar to the ones between herself and Anna Kournikova at the beginning of her own career.
“When I was coming up I was compared to (Anna) Kournikova for many years and still occasionally the name comes up in articles,” Sharapova wass quoted by AAP.
“That’s just part of it, part of the game, part of the business.
“It’s understandable. It is what it is.
“I said when I was still a teenager I didn’t want to be the next anyone – I wanted to be the first Maria Sharapova.
“And that’s how I’ve been through my whole career – we all want to create our own path.”
Sharapova has won all three of the duo’s previous encounters, but world number two Bouchard has been in scintillating form in Australia and goes into the clash as favourite.
