Tomovic defeated the tournament’s number one for aces in a tense 6-4, 7-6 (10-8), 6-3 showdown to book a last-16 encounter with seventh seed Tomas Berdych on Sunday.
Another home grown star, Nick Kyrgios also booked his place into the final 16 and will face Roger Federer’s vanquisher Andreas Seppi.
Groth forced the first set point in the second set-breaker after losing the first set in just 27 minutes.
He saved two set points with impossible to stop deliveries but he soon caved to give Tomovic a way back into the match, which was all his compatriot needed to bring things to a close.
