Reports in the Daily Mirror suggest the Reds face a tough task to hang on to one of their prize assets, who is already approaching 100 games for the Merseyside club despite his tender years.
The youngster, who has also been capped nine times by England, is the latest in a long line of top stars coveted by the European champions, who rarely fail to get their man.
As the source explains, over the years Madrid have recruited icons such as Alfredo Di Stefano and Ferenc Puskas, they have persuaded Luis Figo to leave Barcelona at the beginning of Real Madrid’s ‘Galactico’ era, and join the likes of Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos and David Beckham, while in more recent years, Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka, Luka Modric, Gareth Bale and James Rodriguez have all been seduced to the Spanish capital.
Sometimes, they can be held at bay. But not for ever, as Daniel Levy can tell you. The Tottenham chairman could argue that he got the maximum for Modric and Bale. But he still sold them both.
With 29-year-old Ronaldo seemingly coming towards the end of his Madrid career, despite his continually impressive performances, the La Liga side are on the lookout for a long-term replacement, and Sterling fits that bill.
