The former Tottenham ace nearly made a £120m move to Old Trafford.
Before making the world record £85.3m transfer to Real Madrid, Gareth Bale held talks with Manchester United about a switch to the Premier League champions, reports the Daily Mirror.
The 24-year-old was said to have flown over from talks in the Spanish capital to speak with the Red Devils – who were prepared to pay £100m for the services of the Welshman.
United had shown interest in Bale all summer and were said to have submitted a £60m offer for the forward back in July, which was rejected by Tottenham Hotspur.
Madrid president Florentino Perez – a man not averse to making comments to the media – has spoken about the interest from the English title holders.
“Tottenham did not want to sell and we respected that,” Perez was quoted by the Mirror.
“Then, when we found out that Manchester United would be making an offer, we made our own.
“Since his childhood he had the dream of playing for Real Madrid and he asked us to make it possible for him to come.”
With a new regime at Old Trafford under manager David Moyes and chief executive Ed Woodward, the club were keen to make a marquee signing to mark the new era.
The Sun are reporting that United would have stretched their offer to £120m for Bale, making the fee Los Blancos paid suddenly seem like a snip.
It’s likely that Spurs were not keen to sell their best player to a league rival however and the Madrid deal was the best outcome in a difficult scenario for the north London club.
In the end the Red Devils had to settle for Marouane Fellaini as the only major arrival on transfer deadline day, whilst the Wales international scored on the attacker’s debut for Los Merengues.
