Ozil could leave the Bernabeu in order to achieve first team football.
Manchester United have been given renewed vigour in the chase to sign Mesut Ozil, with the transfer of Tottenham Hotspur’s Gareth Bale to Real Madrid helping their cause, reports German daily Bild.
The Red Devils have been eyeing up the talented midfielder for some time and the influx of new players at the Santiago Bernabeu has left Ozil worrying for a place in the team.
This is despite the fact that since a £15m switch to the Spanish capital in 2010 the 24-year-old has been in superb form for Los Blancos.
In 158 matches for Madrid in the past three years, Ozil has provided 81 assists and scored 27 goals for the club and was instrumental in the side’s Copa Del Rey triumph of 2011 and then La Liga a year later.
However, midfielders such as Isco and Asier Illarramendi have arrived at the Bernabeu this summer and with a world record £94m expected to be spent on Bale, the Germany international could be left on the sidelines.
This only serves as good news for United who are desperate for some creativity in midfield following the retirement of Paul Scholes and have failed in their attempts to sign Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona.
New manager David Moyes would like a marquee signing to announce the Scot’s takeover at Old Trafford and someone of the calibre of Ozil would be sure to please the fans.
The Madrid star is keen to be playing regularly as it is a World Cup year and with the talent at Germany’s disposal, competition for places will be tough.
