Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has won the 2013 FIFA Ballon d’Or, beating FC Barcelona ace Lionel Messi and Bayern Munich winger Franck Ribery to the award.
The Portuguese ace claimed the honour of best player in the world for the first time since 2008, when he won both the Ballon d’Or and FIFA World Player of the Year, before the two trophies were united.
He breaks an astonishing run from his rival at Barca, Leo Messi, who had claimed the title of world’s best player in each of the last four years, but few could argue with Ronaldo’s individual achievements this year.
Ronaldo scored a preposterous 66 goals in 56 games for both club and country, winning 40 and losing just 6 of those matches.
He also secured Portugal’s place in remarkable fashion, scoring four goals in the two game playoff between his country and Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s Sweden.
The 2013 FIFA Ballon d’Or is just reward for a wonderful year on the pitch for Cristiano Ronaldo, and he showed how much the award meant for him with a deeply emotional and tearful speech.
