Giant German centre-back set to move to La Liga despite Premier League interest…
Barcelona will make a formal offer for Borussia Dortmund’s world-class centre-half Matts Hummels when the transfer window reopens in January, reports the Mirror.
The 24-year-old has been outstanding over the past three seasons for the Bundesliga side, and has established himself as one of the best defenders in world football.
It is widely expected that Barcelona would sign a defender during the summer, following their embarrassing 7-0 aggregate defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League semi-finals. However, after signing Neymar for £50m, Barcelona decided to stick with current defensive options Carlos Puyol, Gerard Pique, Marc Bartra and Javier Mascherano.
Although they have started the season brilliantly, manager Gerardo Martino is keen to make the world-class defensive recruit in January.
Hummels is an immense physical specimen, but also has the technical ability to slot straight into Barcelona’s side. Martino expects his centre-halves to play a high line and start attacks with short passes into midfield, and the German defender has all the attributes for this style of football.
Manchester United were reportedly interested in Hummels, but now look set to miss out on the defender to the Catalan giants.
