Stoichkov believes Madrid are stupid to pay £86m for the Welshman.
The transfer of Gareth Bale from Tottenham Hotspur to Real Madrid seems all but complete, but Barcelona legend Hristo Stochkov has lambasted the price for the Spurs ace.
Madrid are prepared to break the world transfer record once again for the 24-year-old and will trump Cristaino Ronaldo’s fee of four years ago and pay £86m for the Wales international.
Bale failed to turn up to Spurs training on time on Tuesday due to frustration about the Los Blancos deal taking too long and Stochkov believes the whole saga is a farce.
“Bale has shown a lack of respect toward his Tottenham team-mates by not showing up for training,” the Bulgarian told Onda Cero.
“If Bale is worth €100m, I would have been priceless.
“No Brit who came to Spanish football has ever succeeded.”
This may seem a little unfair from Stoichkov on players such as David Beckham, Gary Lineker and Steve McManaman, who all had certain degrees of success in Spain.
However, as a former Barca star the comments could well be deployed to try and undermine the Catalans’ great rivals, although the matter of why Madrid are prepared to pay so much for Bale still remains.
There is no doubting the 24-year-old has been outstanding for Spurs over the past few seasons, but a world record fee comes with a huge burden.
Ronaldo may have almost justified £80m by being utterly prolific, but the same can’t be said about Kaka after the Brazilian made a similar switch.
Cynics however believe that the transfer is less about football – despite Bale’s undeniable talent – and more about the marketability of a British player, as the Spanish giants bid to break the Asian market.
