Barcelona look set to turn their attention to the possible signing of Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen after missing out on Paris Saint-Germain youngster Marquinhos, according to Mundo Deportivo.
The Catalan giants are known to be in the market for new signings in defence this summer after the retirement of Carles Puyol and some below-par displays at the back for much of last season, in which they finished trophyless.
French centre-back Jeremy Mathieu has already been brought in from Valencia, but Barcelona had also been keen on signing Marquinhos from PSG, though it looks like they have failed in their attempts to snap up the talented 20-year-old.
Vermaelen could now be a decent alternative, with the Belgian international unlikely again to be first choice at the Emirates Stadium after being dropped by Arsene Wenger before last season, though Manchester United are also known to be tracking him this summer.
Once regarded as one of the most solid central defenders in the Premier League, Vermaelen could benefit from a move to a new club to help regain his best form.
