The Catalan club’s recent disastrous defensive signings are just the most recent in a long line…
Barcelona do not have a good record when it comes to signing centre-backs.
Dimitro Chygrynsky, Gabi Milito, Thomas Vermealen, Winston Bogarde… the list goes on. In fact their best centre-back in recent seasons has been Javier Mascherano, a midfielder.
But as it turns out, when it comes to signing defenders, their mistakes are just as bad in terms of who they DON’T buy.
Spanish paper AS recently revealed that Barcelona scouts watched Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane while he was at Lens, but produced a highly critical report on him, which dismissed the possibility of signing him.

The Catalan club will be kicking themselves now, as they watch the Frenchman develop into an ever more complete and coveted defender.
With speed, intelligence and great aerial ability, Varane would have contributed so much to Barca over the last few years.
Without Pepe and Sergio Ramos ahead of him in the pecking order, the defender might have developed even faster. Who knows what a few years in Pep’s training sessions would have done for his technical abilities too.
